What format do I need?

MusicXML (.mxl, .xml, .musicxml) — The best format. Preserves notes, rhythms, key signatures, dynamics, and more. Export from MuseScore (free), Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, Noteflight, or Flat.io via File → Export → MusicXML.

MIDI (.mid, .midi) — From any DAW, keyboard, or sequencer. Carries notes and timing but not enharmonic spelling or lyrics.

ABC notation (.abc) — Compact text format for folk and traditional tunes. Thousands of free tunes at abcnotation.com.
